Gennadiy Golovkin to fight Sergiy Derevyanchenko for Canelo Alvarez’s IBF belt after Mexican star was stripped of middleweight title

GENNADIY GOLOVKIN is to get a chance to win back his old world title with a fight against Sergiy Derevyanchenko.

Talks between Derevyanchenko and IBF middleweight world champ Canelo Alvarez broke down, with the organisation deciding to strip the Mexican of the belt.

And now is reporting that GGG is being lined up for a crack at becoming world champ again.

It is being reported that there are "advanced talks for such a fight, which is being targeted for October 5 live on DAZN".

Canelo versus Derevyanchenko looked like a done deal at one stage but negotiations came to a standstill before the weekend.

The IBF reportedly allowed Canelo multiple postponements on the purse bid for the fight.

And Derevyanchenko’s team even contacted the IBF to insist the star should not to be stripped by Monday’s deadline to give them more time to seal the showdown.

DE LA HOYA FUMING

However, the two parties have not been able to agree on the financials, even with Canelo reportedly looking to drop £4.1million from his guaranteed £29m from DAZN.

And that has led the IBF to strip him of their title.

Canelo’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya has blasted the decision and claimed it is an "insult to boxing".

A statement from him read: “We are extremely disappointed at the IBF for forcing the world’s best fighter to relinquish his world title.

“We have been in serious negotiations with Sergiy Derevyanchenko’s promoter.

"We offered his team an unprecedented amount of money for a fighter of his limited stature and limited popularity, but the truth is that I’m now certain they never had any intention of making a deal.

“But instead they wanted to force us to relinquish Canelo’s belt. This is an insult to boxing and more importantly an insult to the boxing fans of the world.”
