MARSEILLE snubbed Victor Waynama after Tottenham offered the unsettled midfielder on transfer deadline.

That's according to French TV station RMC Sport - with Club Brugge target Wanyama also missing out on a loan switch to Celtic.

Kenya skipper Wanyama is yet to play for Spurs this season after their £65m club record signing of Lyon's Tanguy Ndombele over the summer.

And Tottenham were reportedly willing to loan Wanyama to Marseille on loan for the season, ahead of a £7million permanent deal next summer.

But when Marseille landed their top priority, Nantes' anchorman Valentin Rongier, they lost interest in Wanyama, 28.

Ex-Southampton star Wanyama's £2.7m annual wages would have been a steep obstacle anyway for Marseille, especially due to financial Fair Play restrictions.

But the move was off altogether once the Ligue 1 club closed on Rongier - finally using France's "Joker transfer rule" to sign him a day after the transfer window shut.

The special rules allows clubs in France to sign one French player after the deadline.

It all means more frustration for Wanyama, who was linked with a £13m switch to Belgian giants Brugge last month.

Then came talk of a return to Celtic, for whom he played under current boss Neil Lennon.

Now, though, Wanyama faces a battle to even get close to the Spurs starting XI, particularly with Dele Alli's return imminent following the England ace's hamstring injury.
