Canelo Alvarez steps up TWO weight divisions to take on Sergey Kovalev in blockbuster November showdown

SAUL “CANELO” ALVEREZ is stepping up two weight divisions to fight Sergey Kovalev on November 2 in Las Vegas.

The 29-year-old, who holds titles at 160lbs, will try to become a champion in his fourth weight class when he moves up to light heavyweight.

Golden Boy Promotions announced the showdown this weekend.

Canelo heads into the clash on the back of a points victory over Daniel Jacobs in May.

Russian Kovalev defended his piece of the light heavyweight title on August 24 by stopping Anthony Yarde in his homeland.

Kovalev (34-3-1) is known as a big puncher with knockouts in 29 of his wins.

But the 36-year-old has suffered two defeats at the hands of Andre Ward.

And he struggled at times against Yarde before eventually stopping him in the 11th round.

Alvarez (52-1-2) has only tasted defeat once.

That came in 2013 when he lost by a majority decision to Floyd Mayweather Jr.

The star has held titles in three weight classes, beginning at 154 pounds.

Kovalev’s promoter, Kathy Duva, said: “Canelo is to be praised for asking to challenge Sergey Kovalev.

“Win or lose, he will make history and Sergey is extremely pleased to get the chance to test his mettle against another future Hall of Famer.”

The fight will be broadcast by the streaming service DAZN.

The broadcasters have a long-term deal with Canelo.
