Amir Khan pays tribute to surgeon who mended his broken hand after SunSport’s revelation last month

After 13 long years the Bolton boxer can unleash the full power of a right hook - thanks to medical maestro Mike Hayton

AMIR KHAN has paid tribute to the orthopaedic surgeon who mended his busted right hand.

As SunSport revealed last month, the former world champion has been fighting with a BROKEN hand for the last 13 years, which meant he couldn't unleash the full power of a right hook.

Now he's ready to fight full pelt again in January - thanks to Mr Mike Hayton, a specialist hand surgery based in Manchester.

Bolton star Khan, currently heading for Pakistan where he is busy with humanitarian water projects, tweeted:

Khan decided enough was enough after being brutally ko’d in the sixth round by Saul Alvarez when he jumped up two divisions to challenge for the WBC world middleweight title in May.

Now he's ready to drop down to welterweight and says: “ “I want to fight again in January, then in May and again before the end of 2017.

"I’m going to start training and make sure my hand is fully recovered.

"I don’t want to rush into a fight at the end of this year.

“I want my next fight to be in Britain. I know it’s going to have to be a tune-up having lost the Canelo fight and also having had the hand surgery."

One of his next opponents could be Kell Brook, beaten in five rounds by Mexican Gennady Golovkin in London in Saturday's world title fight after moving up to middleweight.

Confirmed Khan: “Welterweight is the weight for me and there are big fights out there still — including Kell.

“A fight between me and Kell is not only a big fight in England, but it could be big globally."

Meanwhile, Khan is getting stuck into AK Foundation water projects in Pakistan and Africa.
