James DeGale vs Badou Jack: Joe Calzaghe

JOE CALZAGHE cannot wait to hand over his old title as the planet’s best super-middleweight to James DeGale.

Calzaghe, who retired unbeaten in 46 fights, finally established his reputation around the world when he blitzed American Jeff Lacy in 12 brutal rounds a decade ago at the Manchester Arena.

Calzaghe, 44, insisted: “The defining moment of my career was the beating I gave Lacy — he was supposed to be the American who had the skill and power to end my dominance. My points win was so emphatic  it finally made all my critics admit  I was the best in the world.

“That win for the WBO and IBF titles and the independent Ring Magazine belt defined my career.

“A win over Jack for the IBF and WBC titles with the Ring award also on the line, will define James’ career.”

Calzaghe faced a constant barrage of criticism during his 15-year career and was labelled a ‘slapper’ by many who questioned his ability to punch properly.

He added: “Critics always seemed ready to jump on my back. James seems to have had his knock-backs similar to mine but on Saturday he can finally shut everyone up.

“It will be tough for James, although his superior skills should see him named as undisputed champion.

“I’ve seen Jack fight. He’s decent but does nothing to exceptional.

“I have always rated DeGale and I expect him to boss the fight.

“This is the fourth time he has boxed away in America and each time he has stepped up to impress more and more.

“I’d love it if James was recognised as the world’s top supermiddle just like I eventually was during my time.

“This is his big chance to come back home as  world No 1 and as long as he brings his A game, he’s capable of it.”
