Joe Calzaghe is keen to hand over mantle of world’s best super-middleweight to James DeGale if the Londoner topples Badou Jack in New York
Welsh legend says the Brit will be acclaimed as No1 after Saturday's long-awaited fight with the US-based Swede
JOE CALZAGHE cannot wait to hand over his old title as the planet’s best super-middleweight to James DeGale.
Calzaghe, who retired unbeaten in 46 fights, finally established his reputation around the world when he blitzed American Jeff Lacy in 12 brutal rounds a decade ago at the Manchester Arena.
And Calzaghe believes DeGale, 30, will be recognised as the world’s best at 168lbs after Saturday’s fight with US- based Swede Badou Jack in New York.

Calzaghe, 44, insisted: “The defining moment of my career was the beating I gave Lacy — he was supposed to be the American who had the skill and power to end my dominance. My points win was so emphatic it finally made all my critics admit I was the best in the world.
“That win for the WBO and IBF titles and the independent Ring Magazine belt defined my career.
“A win over Jack for the IBF and WBC titles with the Ring award also on the line, will define James’ career.”
Calzaghe faced a constant barrage of criticism during his 15-year career and was labelled a ‘slapper’ by many who questioned his ability to punch properly.
