Canelo vs Golovkin 3 will ‘absolutely’ happen in 2020, predicts Oscar De La Hoya

THE TRILOGY between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin is “absolutely” set for next year, promoter Oscar De La Hoya revealed.

Middleweight rivals Canelo and GGG saw a third fight between each other fall through this summer.

Now Mexican superstar Alvarez, 28, will leap two division and challenge WBO light-heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev, 36, on November 2.

Golovkin, 37, meanwhile, faces Sergiy Derevyanchenko on October 5 for the vacant IBF middleweight title, after Canelo was stripped of the belt.

But De Le Hoya told the the duo will face off next year to complete their trilogy.

He said: “You will absolutely see Canelo and GGG fight next year.

“It could be in May or September, but that fight will happen.

“But Canelo’s fight against Kovalev is huge. I think it’s bigger than a fight against GGG.

"It’s a mega-fight. Kovalev has a real shot to knock him out and beat him and people know that.”

Canelo was fortunate to walk away with a draw when he first challenged for GGG’s unified middleweight titles in September 2017.

After the Mexican failed a drug test in early 2018, which he put down to “contaminated meat” the May rematch was backdated to September.

In another thrilling and razor thin 12-round battle in Las Vegas, Golovkin was again on the end of a contentious decision as Canelo won the WBC and WBA belts on points.

Alvarez added the IBF strap to his collection this May after outscoring Daniel Jacobs, but failing to agree terms with mandatory challenger Derevyanchenko opened the door for GGG to re-claim a former title.
