Australian batsman Matt Renshaw sprints off the field during the First Test against India in Pune… after suffering from a severely upset stomach

Twitter erupts as English-born opener contracts a severe case of Delhi belly, causing him to retire from the crease

AS an opening batsman you always dream of being in the runs early in a Test match.

But for Australian Matt Renshaw, they weren't quite the runs he was hoping for.

After a quick word with captain and incoming No3 Steve Smith, it was announced the opener would be retiring 'hurt'.

However, it later transpired that Renshaw, 20, was suffering from a severe case of Delhi belly.

From Aussie team-mates, to his Indian opponents and even the general public, it's fair to say the eruption on Twitter was explosive.

Fellow Australian international Adam Zampa wrote: "Can we get a hotspot please, ump?"

Meanwhile Indian opponent Ravi Jadeja quipped: "Matt Renshaw retired hurt, I offered him a spicy combo of Vada Pav and Misal Pav this morning. That did the trick."

However, not everyone saw the funny side, with Baggy Green legend Allan Border saying: "I hope he's lying on the table in there half dead."

Ex-Aussie batsman Damien Martyn agreed, adding:"I'm still getting my head around this... Justin Langer would of lost a limb and still batted on."

Incidentally, Renshaw did later return to the crease, notched his 50, before being caught for 68, as Australia closed the day on a disappointing 256-9.

Amazingly, Renshaw became the youngest Aussie to score a 50 in Asia as well as it being the second-highest debut Test innings in India by a player under 21-years-old, after Kane Williamson.
