EOIN MORGAN bizarrely survived the ball hitting the stumps, as England racked up a mammoth first innings total in the second ODI against Ireland.

The Irish-born England captain saw the ball collide with the base of the stumps off the bowling of Paul Stirling.

At that stage, Morgan was on 39 from just 35 balls and looking in his typically imperious form.

Moving well over to the leg side, Stirling followed Morgan, with the batsman forced to reshuffle and nurdle the ball away.

However, he can only edge the ball onto his own leg as the ball rolled, at some speed, towards the stumps.

Despite Morgan's best efforts to kick it away in time, he couldn't make any contact and the ball blasted into the base of the off stump.

Fortunately for the skipper, the bail refused to dislodge and he was gifted a lifeline.

He and Ireland wicket-keeper Niall O'Brien could see the funny side of it, as they shared a laugh and a hug.

Morgan went on to blast 76 from 79 balls as England reached 328-6 from their 50 overs.

Joe Root made 73, while fellow Yorkshireman Jonny Bairstow smashed 72 from just 44 balls as England added some vital late runs.

Bairstow was ably assisted by Adil Rashid in the lower order, as he hit 39 from just 25 balls as Ireland's attack took a late punishing.
