A MAN drove into the middle of a cricket pitch during a major game -= sparking fear and amazement from players and officials.
The driver twice tried to swerve his Suzuki Wagon R on the 22-yard wicket after escaping onto the field in a major security breach.
Delhi's Ranji Trophy match against Uttar Pradesh in India was halted as staff tried to make amends for their apparent blunder, report.
International stars like Gautam Gambhir, Ishant Sharma and Rishabh Pant were among those watching in astonishment before the man finally stopped his car.
Sharma himself later tweeted: "drive in theater just progressed to #DriveIn match. Shocking scene.."
Cricket fans were equally staggered as social media users quickly got in gear to comment.
Navneet Mundhra tweeted; "Get over streakers and dogs.. In Delhi, a Ranji Trophy game was halted as a man drove car onto the pitch."
And Syed Faridul fumed: "Shame shame shame! How can such security breach happen in an important match?"
Raghunath Sahoo claimed: "It's deliberately being done.. It's a major security lapse n totally unacceptable.. that person should be behind bars."
The incredible incident began when a driver, later reportedly identified as Girish Sharma, drove straight through the main gate of the Airforce ground.
Cars should be checked at the gate but instead the driver is thought to have got in unchallenged.
He then failed to head for the parking area - behind the main pavilion - and drove onto the field of play, all the way out to the middle.
Security personnel at last responded effectively once he stopped his car.
They closed the gate to stop him escaping.
First Cricket say the "allegedly inebriated man" was held by the Airforce Police and then handed over to Delhi Police for questioning.
