Morgan and Roy have scans today after England’s double World Cup injury blow
EOIN MORGAN and Jason Roy will have scans today after England’s DOUBLE World Cup injury blow.
Joe Root’s hundred sparked an eight-wicket romp against the West Indies.
But captain Morgan went off with a back spasm while fielding and star batsman Roy tweaked a hamstring for the second time this summer.
Morgan, 32, was in so much pain he could not stand up at the post-match media conference and had to be driven home from Southampton.
England medics expect to confirm results of the scans either late today or tomorrow.
Morgan said: “When any two players go down, it’s a bit of a worry. But we’re not at panic stations or anything yet.
“We’ll see how things go in the next 48 hours and take it from there.
“My back is sore. I’ve had back spasms before and it normally takes a few days to settle down. But I’ll get a better indication in the morning.
“Jason has a tight hamstring and is going for a scan, It will probably take 48 hours before we have the results.”
JOE PROBLEM
Root moved up to open and Chris Woakes batted No 3 as England raced past the Windies’ 212 all out with nearly 17 overs to spare.
But the two crocks are both doubtful for England’s next two games against Afghanistan on Tuesday and Sri Lanka on Friday.
Roy, 28, is the bigger concern because he missed three weeks after tweaking the same hamstring in April.
But there are no plans to call in replacements yet because players cannot return to the squad once they are switched.
Test skipper Root’s 100 not out was his second century of the tournament — and he also took two wickets with his part-time off-spin.
Morgan added: “Joe was exceptional. He’s the glue that holds us together.
“It’s probably a side of his batting that has got better over the last two or three years that people haven’t seen a lot of, his expansive game.
“He never seems to go at less than a run a ball.”
