Desiet Kidane Tekeste dead at 21: Tributes paid to rising cycling star after being hit by car while out training

CYCLING star Desiet Kidane Tekeste has died at the age of 21 after being involved in a road traffic collision while training.

The Eritrean rising talent is reported to have been riding when she was hit by a car.

Tributes have since poured in for the 21-year-old, with cycling’s governing body lead the way.

The Union Cycliste Internationale () penned a touching tribute on Twitter.

It read: “With her constant smile, kindness, respect and deep passion for cycling, Desiet Kidane Tekeste was a rising young talent who will be greatly missed.

“Our thoughts are with her family, friends and @WCC_Cycling team-mates and coaches during this tragic time.”

Her team, World Cycling Centre () tweeted: “Words can’t express our sadness to hear of the passing of 21-year-old UCI WCC athlete, Desiet Kidane Tekeste from Eritrea.

“We will miss you Desiet.”

Africa Rising Cycling added: “Awful awful news. What a complete tragedy. A truly wonderful person #RIP Desiet.”

Former British Cycling president Brian Cookson wrote: “So sad to hear this. Condolences to her family and loved ones.”

The official account for the women’s Tour de France tweeted: “Our sincerest condolences to her family and loved ones.”

A supporter added: “Our hearts are aching. We lost a very beautiful soul and very talented young lady

“Words can’t express how we are hurt. It is such a sad news.”

Tekeste had been extraordinarily active up until her tragic passing, taking part in FOUR races in October alone.

She also competed at the World Championships in September, but failed to finish the 98-mile race.

Tekeste also represented her nation in the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, taking part in the criterium, duo time trial and road race.
