Wenger accuses Bayern Munich of ‘manipulating’ Serge Gnabry’s Arsenal exit and reveals he begged German to stay

ARSENE WENGER has alleged that Bayern Munich "manipulated" Serge Gnabry into leaving Arsenal.

Fans questioned why the Gunners allowed the speedster to join Werder Bremen for just £5million in 2016 after he scored four past Tottenham.

And Wenger claims there were strings being pulled behind closed doors to lure Gnabry, who joined Bayern a year later, away.

He told  “We tried to extend his contract for a very long time and I think that Bayern manipulated behind the scenes, that if he went to Bremen he would join Bayern after.

“He was always a very talented boy who lacked confidence in some stages, but we always thought we had a player who could achieve a lot.

“He came back from a very bad experience at West Brom where his confidence was destroyed. I tried to rebuild him because I believed in him.”

Tony Pulis infamously claimed Gnabry, 24, was "not good enough" to play during a loan spell at West Brom.

The Welshman gave the youngster just 12 minutes of action before terminating his loan early.

But he was made to eat his words as Gnabry feasted on the hapless Tottenham defence.

Wenger added: “They’d just won 3-0 at Paderborn, you wouldn’t expect them to come and put seven goals away at Tottenham.

"I think it was one of those nights where everything goes for you and everything against Tottenham.

“A top-level career is consistency, if you look at the players that dominate our sport it’s the ones that show huge consistency and that’s what is it at stake.

"Can he maintain the quality of performances that he showed the other night?”

Gnabry is in line to get some action for Germany in their friendly against Argentina tonight.
