ENGLAND WOMEN have sold out Wembley Stadium for the very first time as 90,000 fans have bought tickets for the friendly clash with Germany.

The match on November 9 would set a new record attendance for a women's game in the United Kingdom, eclipsing the 80,203 fans present for the 2012 Olympic Final between United States and Japan at the same venue.

Phil Neville's side could almost double the record of 45,619 fans for an England home match which was set in another friendly between England and Germany at Wembley in November 2014.

Women's football has surged in popularity after the England team reached the semi-final of the 2019 World Cup in France this summer.

The tournament saw record British television audiences for women's football with a massive 11.7 million viewers tuning in to see the Lionesses crash out to the United States.

It was their third successive major tournament semi-final and the prolonged success of the national side has boosted attendances at home.

The 29,238 fans, a new record for an England women's home game away from Wembley, witnessed the side's first match since the World Cup.

England captain Steph Houghton is no stranger to playing in front of a big crowd at the national stadium, she scored the winner when Great Britain beat Brazil 1-0 in the 2012 Olympics at Wembley with 70,584 people in attendance.

Houghton and her team-mates will hope the majority of ticket holders attend the game as the England Women's side look to make history and carry on their momentum from the World Cup.
