The 33-year-old Premier League legend had a hand in DC United’s equaliser as his cross was knocked on to Lucas Rodriguez, who finished off to send the game to extra-time.

But in a disastrous 30 minutes, which saw Rooney subbed at half-time, goals from Richie Laryea, a Jonathan Osorio double and Nick DeLeon strike sent his side packing.

Toronto now advance to the Eastern Conference semi-final on Wednesday against East top seed New York City.

DC United skipper and top scorer Rooney arrived Stateside in the middle of last season and guided the club from league strugglers to play-off contenders.

But the former Everton man confirmed in August he was returning to England at the end of the MLS campaign to be a player and assistant coach for Derby.

United manager Ben Olsen said: “He has been a big plus for this club.

“He has helped us in a big way.”

Rooney netted 25 goals in his 52 DC United appearances, making the MLS Best XI in 2018 and All Star squad this year.

He returns to England two seasons after his second Everton stint.

Rooney left United in 2017 after a record-breaking 13-year Old Trafford career  - and spent just a sole season back at Goodison Park, signing in summer 2017.
