TOTTENHAM striker Son Heung-min's red card for his mis-timed tackle that led to Andre Gomes breaking his ankle has been rescinded.

An independent panel has overturned the decision taken on the pitch by referee Martin Atkinson.

He was originally going to issue the South Korean star with a yellow card, but after checking on Gomes he decided to upgrade it to a red.

Son was in tears after his lunge led to Gomes getting his foot caught in the turf and suffering a break and dislocation in his ankle.

The FA's statement read: "Son Heung-min will be available for Tottenham Hotspur FC's next three domestic fixtures after an independent Regulatory Commission upheld a claim of wrongful dismissal.

"The forward was sent off for serious foul play during the Premier League fixture against Everton FC on Sunday 3 November 2019."

Son is even in contention to start for Spurs in their Champions League game away at Red Star Belgrade on Wednesday night.

His manager Pochettino said that the striker was "in a very good way" and is "in good form" despite "feeling sorry" for what happened at the weekend.

The South Korea international has been receiving support from his club following his involvement in the incident.

He was visibly distraught after seeing the extent of Gomes' injury and was inconsolable after the match.

That led to some doubt over whether he would travel with Spurs for their vital Champions League clash against Red Star Belgrade.

But as SunSport reported, he was part of the group that left from Stansted Airport on Tuesday.

Son, 27, was left inconsolable following the injury and was in floods of tears inside the Spurs dressing room.

GOMES OPERATION SUCCESSFUL

Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino labelled Atkinson's decision to show his star forward a red card as "unbelievable."

After the game, the Premier League released a statement explaining why the colour of the card had been upgraded.

It read: "The red card for Son was for endangering the safety of a player which happened as a consequence of his initial challenge."

SunSport reported on Monday afternoon how Gomes had successfully undergone an operation on his fractured and dislocated ankle.

A statement from his employers said: "Everton Football Club can confirm Andre Gomes underwent surgery to repair a fracture dislocation to his right ankle earlier today and the procedure went extremely well.

"Andre will now spend some time recovering in hospital, before returning to USM Finch Farm to start his rehabilitation under the guidance of the club's medical staff.

"He is expected to make a full recovery.

"On behalf of Andre, the club would like to thank all Everton supporters and members of the wider football family for the overwhelming messages of support we have received since yesterday's match."

The Portuguese midfielder was back on social media today, retweeting a series of "get well" messages to him.
