WYCOMBE boss Gareth Ainsworth slammed Tranmere “idiots” after Ryan Allsop complained of homophobic abuse.
Home fans allegedly targeted the Chairboys keeper — and he reported it to referee John Busby at half-time of his side’s 2-0 win at Prenton Park.
Police are believed to have made one arrest and are investigating two other individuals after the incident.
Allsop, 27, is understood to have heard comments coming from the home section of the crowd in the first half, and decided to take action himself.
Wycombe were then late in coming out for the start of the second period as the complaint was being made.
Having informed the officials it is now likely to form part of the referee's match report which will spark an FA investigation into what went on.
Wycombe boss Gareth Ainsworth said: "If that's the case then for me there are some stupid idiots about.
"Whether it's racist or homophobic, whatever it is, we have to stamp this out.
"I have got to credit Ryan Allsop for being brave enough to stand up and say I'm reporting this, and that's what we are and I'll stand by him."
The FA confirmed they are investigating the incident and awaiting a report from referee Busby before deciding what course to take.
