ARSENAL are reportedly preparing their formal approach for Brendan Rodgers in an attempt to pull off a spectacular managerial coup.

Many doubt whether the ailing Gunners can tempt the Leicester boss to leave King Power Stadium but that won't deter their early efforts to replace Unai Emery.

According to , Rodgers features high up a shortlist currently being formulated in North London.

Arsenal also have eyes on Mikel Arteta, a former player who has learned his trade under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.

A candidate to succeed Arsene Wenger the last time Arsenal had a vacancy, the Spaniard won't be held back by Guardiola if the Gunners come knocking.

The City boss said in the week: "I said many times with my players, staff, they’re free to do what they want to do."

Mauricio Pochettino is still in the mix but not reported to be among the top preferences for the role given his recent exit from Tottenham.

And there are growing doubts over Massimiliano Allegri despite the Italian being out of work.

Still the clear favourite with the bookies, the former Juventus man is said to not want a return to management until the summer while Arsenal have concerns over his command of the English language.

Another man with short odds is Nuno Espirito Santo, but the Mirror insist that club bosses are no fans of his handling of the media.

That could pave the way for Patrick Vieira with the Premier League winning former captain likely a very popular choice.

David Seaman backed the Nice boss when speaking to the BBC on Friday, insisting: "I knew what he was like as a player. I knew what he was like as a captain.

"He was a born leader and everybody knows that. Maybe go down that route instead of a tried and tested route."

For now, Arsenal have entrusted Freddie Ljungberg as the interim boss, assisted by academy manager Per Mertesacker.
