Man Utd player ratings: De Gea produces shocking blunder as McTominay only standout player in Watford defeat

DAVID DE GEA'S howler and a Troy Deeney penalty ensured Watford won their first home game of the season.

But it spelled more trouble for Manchester United who failed to keep a clean sheet for the 13th Premier League game in a row.

Here's how SunSport's Joshua Jones rated the Red Devils...

David De Gea - 3

Somewhat fortunate to get away with another set-piece struggle, dropping a corner under pressure but was saved by the referee's whistle.

But then the Premier League's goalkeeper of the decade had an absolute shocker, somehow letting Sarr's scuffed bouncing shot slip right through his fingers and the ball squirmed over the line. That will be on blooper reels for years to come.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka - 4

Started off solidly enough defensively but his ineffectiveness in the attacking third was exposed again as he offered little threat in attack for Manchester United.

Wan-Bissaka then dived in clumsily on Sarr to give away the penalty which Deeney smashed home - a lazy tackle and one he did not need to make.

And then struggled to cope with Gerard Deulofeu down the Watford left.

Victor Lindelof - 5

Solid enough as he and partner Maguire tried to deal with the physical threat of Deeney but arguably out of position in the lead up to the penalty.

But that is now conceded 22 goals this season for United and 13 Premier League games without a clean sheet.

Harry Maguire - 4

His 30-second spell in the middle of the second half summed up United's game.

Trying to unlock the Watford defence, he gave away the ball with an ambitious through ball and then at the other end was dispossessed trying to carry it out.

Wasted a glorious chance in the dying seconds by sticking a header straight at Foster.

Luke Shaw - 5

Was done for pace by Sarr and resorted to dragging the flying winger back and was duly booked.

Looked sluggish at times and struggled to deal with the Watford attackers.

Fred - 6

United's fastest player started his 11th Premier League game in a row and is forming a solid partnership with Scott McTominay.

Linked up with the Scot well again and plenty of United's play went through the Brazilian

Scott McTominay - 6

Had United's first shot on target in the 58th minute when his drive was beaten back into the danger area by Foster. Ran on to the rebound but sailed it over.

Was one of United's better players, not that it is a particular achievement today.

Daniel James - 5

Was rather anonymous throughout the 58 minutes that he was on the field.

A poor game for the winger and was subbed off early as Solskjaer looked to change things up.

Jesse Lingard - 5

Was desperate to try and make things work in the No10 and had the perfect chance to open the scoring.

Made a brilliant run and was clean through but decided to try and chip Ben Foster... his effort looped harmlessly over and his Premier League goal drought continued.

Marcus Rashford - 4

Looked a little off the pace early on, miscontrolling the ball and giving it away.

Then went very, very quiet for the rest of the game making next to no impact at all and failing to threaten until the 90th minute.

Turned well inside the box but his left-footed shot was blocked by Foster's foot.

Anthony Martial - 5

Needlessly caught offside too many times, did not lead the line as he should have done - the "almost-impossible-to-drop" Mason Greenwood can feel hard done by and should start against Newcastle on Boxing Day.

Offered a little extra when coming in off the left wing but like the rest of the attackers, never looked like finding the back of the net.

SUBS:

Mason Greenwood (for James, 58 mins)

The young star was turned to when United fell 2-0 behind. Hardly made an impact but neither did Martial.

Paul Pogba (for Lingard, 64 mins)

His long-awaited return from injury was not quite how he would have expecting with his team two behind.

Certainly improved his side but ultimately to no avail.

Juan Mata (for McTominay, 72 mins)

Brought on to add some more creativity into midfield. Couldn't. Put tame free-kick wide with final kick.
