Man Utd draft in keeper coach Craig Mawson from Burnley to help struggling David De Gea after dip in form

MANCHESTER UNITED have hired Burnley goalkeeping coach Craig Mawson to work with struggling David De Gea.

The 40-year-old has been snapped up to replace Emilio Alvarez who left Old Trafford earlier this year.

De Gea, 29, has come under fire recently after a series of blunders cost his team vital goals.

His most recent gaffe was against Watford when a scuffed shot from Ismaila Sarr somehow squeezed through his hands at the near post.

And only a week earlier, his weak punch against Everton directly led to Victor Lindelof turning into his own net at Old Trafford.

The incoming Mawson played for Halifax, Morecambe and Hereford United but has built up a solid reputation as a coach - even winning the FA's goalkeeping coach of the year award in 2015.

Mawson will link up with the Red Devils this week and will work under United's senior goalie coach Richard Harris - paying close attention to De Gea.

After the Watford shocker set the Hornets on their way to a 2-0 victory, De Gea was accused of suffering from "new contract syndrome".

The game marked the 13th Premier League game in row in which Manchester United and De Gea failed to keep a clean sheet - the last one coming on September 14, just two days before he signed his bumper new £350,000-a-week contract.

Before Saturday's 2-0 win at Burnley - which Mawson watched - United's 1-0 win over Leicester at Old Trafford was the last time De Gea collected his clean sheet bonus.

His international career has also taken a hit as Chelsea's Kepa has been preferred with United's stopper featuring in just three of Spain's ten recent Euro 2020 qualifiers.
