BRUNO FERNANDES is comfortably outperforming his potential new team-mates when it comes to creating chances  - highlighting why Manchester United are trying to sign him.

The attacking midfielder, 25, is being lined up for a £51million switch from Sporting Lisbon after being linked with an Old Trafford move over the summer.

Despite hammering Norwich 4-0 on Saturday, United have struggled for goals this season, scoring 36 in 22 games.

That is the second fewest in the top six with only newly-promoted Sheffield United's 24 strikes below them.

Liverpool, meanwhile, have hit the net 50 times and Manchester City have a whopping 62 goals.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been using Jesse Lingard and Andreas Pereira in the No10 role this season but they have struggled to create.

Lingard has no goals or assists since 2018 while his Brazilian team-mate has provided just three assists and one goal in 19 matches this season.

Daniel James is the best of United's midfielders with nine goal contributions in 21 matches from out wide.

But Fernandes blows him out of the water with eight goals and seven assists in just 15 league appearances.

He is also comfortably out in front in terms of chances created with 55 - despite playing FEWER games than the likes of James, Pereira, Fred, Lingard and Scott McTominay.

Sporting officials reportedly travelled to London for talks with United chiefs over Fernandes last week and fans will hope the club have finally got their man.

United host Wolves in their FA Cup replay on Wednesday before a daunting trip to Anfield at the weekend.
