With the striker out for six weeks due to a stress fracture in his back and teenage reserve Mason Greenwood rarely trusted with a start, Slimani has emerged as a contender to fill in.

claim the Leicester man, currently on loan at Monaco, has been the subject of an enquiry from Old Trafford.

The 31-year-old has scored just once in two months despite a promising start to life in Ligue 1.

Leicester initially signed Slimani for £28million on deadline day in August 2016 but he struggled to make an impact.

After 18 months in the Foxes team, the Algerian was loaned out to Newcastle and Fenerbahce before his current stint in Monaco.

Yet, when pressed on a potential loan deal to the end of the season, Brendan Rodgers' side reportedly demanded £4m.

SunSport understand the bid for the Sporting CP star to have collapsed with attention turning on Birmingham's £30m teenager Jude Bellingham.

Moussa Dembele of Lyon and Inter's Lautaro Martinez are other names linked as a January move for a big name appears nigh-on impossible to pull off.

That has generated rumours of a mad swoop for veteran former striker Carlos Tevez, now at Boca Juniors.
