Now Saints have swooped in to snatch the right-back on loan until the end of the season with the option of a permanent £12million transfer in the summer.
Palace switched their attention to 19-year-old Baggies prospect Ferguson as they searched for a replacement for Aaron Wan-Bissaka following his move to Manchester United.
Ferguson is out of contract at The Hawthorns this summer and the Eagles have now persuaded Slaven Bilic to allow him to leave this month.
Palace look to have beaten off late interest from Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund who wanted to take the England under-19 international to Germany.
Ferguson has already rejected interest from Schalke.
