ARSENAL are reportedly hoping to land Matty Longstaff on a free transfer in the summer.

The 20-year-old midfielder's contract is set to expire in June and he has failed to agree new terms with Newcastle.

According to TeamTalk, the Gunners are among the lost list of clubs that want to bag themselves a bargain.

Longstaff has caught Mikel Arteta's attention after scoring two goals in seven Premier League appearances this season, including a long-range stunner on his debut in a 1-0 win over Manchester United.

Despite his breakthrough season, the source states that he is considering leaving his hometown club this summer.

Borussia Dortmund, Ajax, Club Brugge, Inter Milan and Atalanta have allegedly made contact with Longstaff.

Everton and West Ham are also said to be interested in the England Under-20 star.

Speaking about the midfielder's future last month, boss Steve Bruce said: "It's a concern for us all, of course it is.

"I hope we can get that tied up, I really do. But, they've got the power these days, the players.

"We see it often now with young players as well. I hope there's a bit of common sense.

"There's nobody, at 19, played more games than him. He's got an opportunity."

Arteta will be keen to strengthen his squad in the summer, but is likely that he will be working with a tight budget.

Ex-Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho has also emerged as a target after his disappointing loan spell with Bayern Munich.
