Although the collision with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang looked innocuous, he fell awkwardly and caused serious damage to both the ACL and exterior meniscus.

But now, eight months after his surgery with Manuel Leyes, he is almost ready to return to action.

Asensio was already doing fitness and strength work at Real Madrid's Valdebebas training ground and was on the verge of rejoining first-team training.

But when one of the club's basketball players tested positive for coronavirus in March, the facility was closed with athletes forced to work from home.

As reported by , Asensio took home a load of equipment and was able to set up a home gym across his lounge and garden to ensure all his hard work was not undone.

The Spanish international has done sessions with his brother Igor, sometimes working for up to eight hours a day, with the country in lockdown.

As well as gym and pool work, Asensio has finally begun training with a ball at his feet again - providing both a physical and mental lift.

He no longer has Euro 2020 as a focal point for his return but reports state that those close to the playmaker have been impressed by his positive attitude since returning.

Asensio is appreciating life more, has extra determination to succeed and even lost weight by improving his diet.

The Palma-born midfielder took to Instagram to show he has not lost his touch, either, by sharing a video of him expertly volleying the ball off the wall and controlling it, all the while avoiding falling into his pool.

Asensio's next goal is to get back to training with his team-mates and after that he has his eyes focused on stepping back on to the Bernabeu pitch to help Zinedine Zidane's side finish the season.

The star moved to Los Blancos from Mallorca in 2014 but spent two years on loan before breaking into the side and has racked up 27 goals in 135 appearances.

Now as he makes his comeback, he will be hoping to add more silverware to his rapidly-growing trophy cabinet.

Asensio has already won the LaLiga, two Champions Leagues, two Super Cups and three Club World Cups as well as the Under-19s European Championships with Spain in 2015.

He even added the LaLiga FIFA tournament to his haul in March.

More than 170,000 people watched Asensio, playing as Real, beat Aitor Ruibal of Leganes 4-1 in the final, the culmination of a weekend of action involving 18 LaLiga sides.
