Oxford confirm two positive coronavirus cases just three weeks before League One play-off semi-final vs Portsmouth

OXFORD UNITED have confirmed two positive tests for coronavirus were returned on Thursday - just three weeks before their League One play-off semi-final.

The Yellows take on Pompey in their crunch semi-final first leg on Friday July 3 - just three weeks from now.

Oxford have confirmed there were two positive results returned after Thursday's round of coronavirus testing

The affected players will now be forced to self-isolate away from the squad for ten days as a precaution, despite showing no symptoms.

A club statement read: "Oxford United can confirm that two people tested positive during the latest round of Covid-19 tests.

"All first-team players and staff had previously tested negative in two earlier tests.

"But Thursday’s tests came back with two positive results and those involved will now be off-site and asked to self-isolate for ten days as a precaution.

"Neither had symptoms and can exercise independently within the current guidelines while they are away from the club.

"The medical team will be in contact with them on a day-to-day basis.

"All players will still be completing their daily medical questionnaire and temperature checks, with regular testing continuing."

The dates for the League One and League Two play-off games were announced earlier on Friday after it was revealed the seasons would be cancelled.

The final standings in both leagues were both worked out based on a points per game system - despite Ipswich's "insane" suggestion.

As well as Portsmouth vs Oxford, Wycombe Wanderers' trip to Fleetwood Town will also take place on July 3.

The return fixtures will be played on Monday July 6 before the final at Wembley is contested a week later on Monday July 13.

The prize will be a place in the Championship for the 2020-21 season.
