Renato Sanches confirms he rejected Man Utd to sign for Bayern Munich
RENATO SANCHES has explained why he turned down an offer from Manchester United.
The Portuguese teenager signed for Bayern Munich instead for an initial £27million that could rise to a staggering £61m with add-ons.
Sanches, 18, was thought to be leaving Benfica for United but changed his mind.
Speaking ahead of his first major international tournament with Portugal, Sanches said:
“Manchester United made an offer. I think it was well known. But I had other offers as well.
“I chose Bayern Munich because it’s a great club. They have a 65,000 seater stadium and an atmosphere similar to Benfica. I’ll win titles.”
United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward was slammed for failing to complete the signing of whizkid midfielder, with reports in Portugal having claimed a deal was nearly done.
Woodward attempted to lay the blame on outgoing United manager Louis van Gaal.
But Woodward, taunted in the past for his failure to get big deals over the line, took a lot of stick on Twitter over this latest setback.
Said Andrew Lee: “United miss out on Renato Sanches. Thought it was basically “done deal”. Woodward is hopeless. Signed by Bayern Munich for €35million.”
WaidMannsHeiL posted: “I don’t get the hate Sanches is getting, Woodward should be the one who gets the hate.”
Iain Taker tweeted: ‘Woodward’s ineptitude at transfers strikes again. Spent far too long on the Sanchez deal. Cue the oh we weren’t interested line now. Joke!’
