The on-fire forward, 18, signed a new four-year contract at Old Trafford in October - and has already scored 15 times this season.

Greenwood has established himself as a key performer across the front three, along with Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.

But it was nearly so different, with Juventus testing Man Utd chiefs' nerve with an astonishing offer for Greenwood last summer.

Andy Mitten, a Man Utd journalist for The Athletic, revealed the secret offer, telling the Talk of the Devils podcast: "I think [Greenwood] can be a world class player.

"I know that there has been offers for him.

And Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer now reckons he is ready for an England call-up.

The Norwegian said: “If you can handle playing for United, then you can handle playing for any team.

"Mason’s got the qualities that not many others have.

“So he could play for England’s full team or Under-21s, I don’t really mind.

"I know he’s doing well for us and it’s great to have him."

Solskjaer is a legend at Old Trafford with his 126 goals from 366 appearances, notching six Premier League titles and the Champions League in 1998-99.

But even he reckons Greenwood is on course to smash his achievements.
