Harry Kane, the sole attacker in England’s team that started against Russia in Marseille, was unable to do what he does best because Hodgson decided he should take the set-pieces.
It meant every time the Three Lions had a chance to score from a corner, their most dangerous players was nowhere near the goal.
Former players and celebrities were left miffed at why diminutive Raheem Sterling was allowed in the penalty box but the muscular Kane not.
England legend Alan Shearer led the complaints and said: “I have to say that if a manager asked me to take corners, my answer would be ‘asl someone else’.”
Former Chelsea star Jody Morris tweeted: “Not sure I’ll ever get my head round Kane on corners.”
And BBC sports presenter Dan Walked added: “Can Kane take goal kicks too?”
The hashtag #KaneOnCorners was trending on Twitter.
Last week Hodgson defended his policy, saying there was no one else in his side as good as Kane at taking corners.
Hodgson said: "I don't need to apologise for Kane taking a corner, especially if you've got a player with his quality striking a ball an no one else in the team who comes up to that level of striking a ball.

"If we think he's the best man in terms of the delivery, putting the ball where we want it, we'll use him.
"If there's someone else who doesn't play as a forward but is equally as good, we'll use him.”
