Dier on fire

Euro 2016: Eric Dier opens scoring for England with super-free kick on 73 minutes vs Russia

Tottenham striker nets past Igor Akinfeev for Three Lions' first goal in France after impressive team performance in Marseille

England's Euro 2016 campaign is up and coming as Eric Dier's free-kick made is 1-0 against Russia.

The Three Lions have been dominant against Russia, and deserved a goal.

Raheem Sterling and Adam Lallana missed several gilt-edged chances, while Wayne Rooney forced Igor Akinfeev into a wonder-save.

Harry Kane was the man on corner and free-kick duty for much of the game, but it was Dier's deadly drive which broke the deadlock.

The Tottenham man became the first Englishman to net directly from a free-kick in European Championships history.

It had been a frustrating game for Roy Hodgson's men, who had been comfortably the better team without finding the back of the net.

Dele Alli was bundled over on the edge of the box and, after a little hesitation, the referee blew for a free-kick.

Dier and Rooney — who had earlier sent a shot over the bar from a set-piece in a similar position — lined up.

And the Three Lions skipper left if for the Tottenham man, who found the top corner with aplomb.

It was only Dier's second England goal — his first being a dramatic winner in the 3-2 friendly victory over Germany in March.
