Sancho, 20, was the Norwegian boss' priority signing in the summer window but the Red Devils failed to strike a deal with Dortmund.

The Bundesliga outfit made it clear they wanted £108m for the England star.

But United persisted with low-ball offers and suggested £70m up front with the potential for a fee to rise to £100m based on future achievements.

United also missed clear deadlines put in place by BVB for a deal to be signed off.

Reports even suggested United's opening offer to Sancho was LOWER than his current salary.

Personal terms were thought to have been agreed in September with the England man and his representatives but negotiations were not able to overcome the difference in valuation.

A combined £227m cost for Sancho's wages and fee proved too much to get a deal done before Monday's deadline.

But United are set to restart the protracted saga in the New Year as they remain convinced the former Manchester City youth product wants to join.

The club are believed to have told Sancho 'we haven't given up on you' despite their failed efforts to poach him.

Sancho has told close pals he will end up at United but did not want to sour his relations with Dortmund by publicly stating his desire to leave or by forcing a move.

He risked the wrath of both Dortmund and England after being spotted at Tammy Abraham's surprise birthday bash, flouting Covid rules.

Sancho issued a grovelling apology for his behaviour and will miss Thursday's Three Lions game against Wales.
