Van de Beek was snapped up from Ajax during the transfer window after starring in both the Eredivisie and Champions League.

United fans were left drooling at the prospect of a midfield three also involving Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes.

But Van de Beek is yet to start in the Premier League under Solskjaer.

And he has just 60 minutes of top-flight football under his belt as a result.

Van de Beek was seen fuming on United’s bench as Solskjaer decided to leave him as an unused sub.

And Red Devils legend Evra has questioned why United splashed the cash on Van de Beek if they have no intention of using him.

Evra told Sky Sports: “We’re talking about Van de Beek. Nothing against the kid, but why have we bought him?

“He’s watching the game from the stand every game. We don’t need him, that’s the truth.”

Fellow pundit Gary Neville added: “He doesn’t seem to be at the forefront of Solskjaer’s plans. It’s a bit of a mystery.

“The more he doesn’t start, and the more he doesn’t come on, the more you’re thinking, ‘£40m player, you’d get him in the team’.

“He must be thinking: ‘What am I doing here?’ at this moment in time.”

However, Solskjaer fired back at Evra and Neville, insisting that Van de Beek will be involved in plenty of matches between now and the end of the season.

He explained: “Don’t worry about that. He’ll get his games, don’t worry.

“It’s easy to say who should be playing and more difficult to say who shouldn’t.”
