MARTIN O'NEILL has claimed he locked assistant Roy Keane in a cage.
The Ireland boss and his fiery assistant were preparing for a vital game against Belgium.
And when asked why Keane was not at the pre-match press conference, O'Neill took the chance to share a joke with reporters.
He said: "I was wondering how long it would take to get a question on Mr Keane. He's fine, he's fine, he really is fine.
"We locked him up about 25 minutes ago and I don't think we are going to allow him to come here. He's caged in at this minute as his beard gets longer and uglier. But he's good - in fact, he's been very good."
The former Aston Villa boss then turned to John O'Shea and asked: "Would you agree, John?"
The Sunderland skipper answered: "Yes, I agree, yes. Definitely the beard is getting slightly longer."
O'Neill rounded off the exchange by calling Keane the Werewolf of Manchester.
The quip highlights the relaxed mood within the Irish camp as they got ready to test themselves against a talented Belgium side.
And O'Shea believes Ireland have found a winning formula with the two men at the helm.
He added: "Since they have worked together, it's been a fantastic combination, so hopefully it will keep getting better and better."
