Unfortunately for him, he accidentally ignited the device, severely burning himself and two other fans in the process.
The unnamed supporter, 18, now faces prosecution for the incident in Nice on Monday, as well as facing a fine.
Nice prosecutor Jean-Michel Pretre confirmed: “The supporter managed to burn himself and two other fans.”
So-called ‘ring of steel’ security surrounding the fan zone is supposed to flag up any dangerous items, such as knives, guns, bottles or flares.
But the local police confirmed, their protective measures ‘do not currently include bottom scans’.
This summer’s European Championships have been blighted with issues regarding flares, despite all explosive devices being banned from the tournament after a the recent terrorist attacks in Paris and Brussels.
Nations such as Croatia and Turkey have already been punished by Uefa, while Hungary, Portugal and Austria face similar action following their fans’ antics during Saturday’s games.
