And McClean, 31, has taken to social media highlighting some of the abuse that he has since received.

The Stoke midfielder posted an image showing a Twitter user writing: “McClean has got corona, I hope he f***ing dies.”

In response, McClean snapped himself working out in his Ireland jersey along with the caption: “Sorry to disappoint ya mutants but… am more than fine.”

McClean must now self-isolate for ten days and then return two negative tests before he can begin training.

The ace will play no part on tonight’s game with Bulgaria and is also out of Stoke’s Championship games with Huddersfield and Norwich.

McClean has often attracted attention on and off the field, and he claims he receives more stick than any player after refusing to wear a poppy on his jersey.

McClean has also been subjected to sick sectarian abuse this year.

A section of Huddersfield supporters directed IRA chants at him at the John Smith Stadium in January.

It came after the FA opened an investigation into abuse he received while playing Barnsley earlier in the season.

McClean has been at Stoke since 2018 and has played 92 times for them.

He also featured for the likes of Sunderland, Wigan and West Brom earlier in his career.
