ENGLAND captain Wayne Rooney has advised Jamie Vardy and new wife Rebekah to keep a lower profile ahead of Monday's clash with Iceland.

Rooney and other senior England players have spoken to the Leicester City striker and other inexperienced members of the squad about keeping their heads down ahead of the last-16 clash with Iceland.

The Vardys, married at the beginning of June, had their wedding pictures published in Hello! magazine.

Rebekah is also a Sun columnist, has made numerous TV appearances and has been much more active on social media.

She was also a victim in the trouble between English and Russian fans in Marseille, where she was tear gassed by French police.

However, Rebekah was again active on Twitter on Thursday afternoon, hitting back at online trolls after Leicester announced the 24-goal striker would sign a new four-year deal to stay with the Foxes.

report that Rooney has spoken to less experienced players in an attempt to avoid the farcical scenes of the 2006 World Cup, where the presence of wags in Germany became a clear distraction.

Rooney, Vardy and Harry Kane played a round of golf on Wednesday, in keeping with avoiding the spotlight.

There is also said to be concern among the squad and manager Roy Hodgson about the way Raheem Sterling has been made a scapegoat by England supporters.

The Manchester City winger was booed during the first half against Wales, and a campaign to bring him back to England raised more than £1,200, attracting hundreds of donors.
