And the tough centre-back has ended speculation over whether he would pen a fresh deal to stay at Signal Induna Park by announcing his departure through his Facebook page.

In a message to fans, Subotic said: "Last year I realised that my love of football and an active role on the pitch is too large to view action from the outside.

"Football is an important part of my life, I love it so much and without whom I would not be.

Back-up centre-half Kolo Toure has been released, with Mamadou Sakho still waiting to find out from UEFA whether he will be banned after failing a drugs test for taking fat-burning pills.

That could lead exiled Croatia defender Dejan Lovren as the club's only first-team centre-back and Subotic's arrival would prove a welcome addition.
