Euro 2016: Wales given major boost with Belgium star Jan Vertonghen reportedly facing four months on the sidelines injured
The Tottenham defender is believed to be on crutches after injuring his ankle ligaments in Belgium's final training session and could miss three months of Premier League action
WALES have been handed a major boost ahead of their Belgium clash with Jan Vertonghen reportedly facing FOUR months out.
It will come as a major boost to Gareth Bale and Co ahead of their quarter-final clash tomorrow.
Belgian reports say Vertonghen was taking part in a final training session in Bordeaux before Marc Wilmots’ side fly to Lille for the last-eight tie with Wales.
And Vertonghen was left on crutches with suspected ligament damage after rolling his ankle in training.
He is believed to have flown to Lille with the rest of the squad, but early estimates suggest he is out of the rest of Euro 2016.
And Tottenham fans will be fearing their man will miss a large chunk of their Premier League campaign – with a four-month lay-off ruling him out until the beginning of November.
He missed 17 Spurs games last season after damaging ligaments in his knee.
Chris Coleman and his players will be delighted that Vertonghen – a former Spurs team-mate of Bale and a rival of Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey – will be missing.
The versatile defender has played at left-back in all four games so far in the tournament.
But he may well have moved inside to his preferred centre-back role against Wales with Barcelona man Thomas Vermaelen out through suspension.
Highly-rated Manchester City centre-back Jason Denayer, 21, was he man tipped to come into the team for banned Vermaelen.
The centre-back has spent the last two seasons on loan at Celtic and then Galatasaray, but is believed to be a man the Citizens see as a major part of their long-term future.
And he may have slotted into the Belgium team at full-back tomorrow, meaning Vertonghen could deal with the threat of Bale through the middle.
But Denayer will now almost certainly have to play in central defence with Jordan Lukaku – brother of Everton star Romelu – filling in at left-back.
