Messi to Chelsea: La Liga chief fears tax fraud shame will drive Barcelona superstar to Premier League

Javier Tebas seeks to reassure Argentinian as Blues and Man City eye world-record moves for disillusioned star

LA LIGA president Javier Tebas insists Lionel Messi is ‘NOT a criminal’ – but admits he fears the Barcelona star’s tax fraud shame could drive him to the Premier League.

The Argentinian icon was sentenced to 21 months jail but is not expected to do any time because prison terms of less than two years in Spain can be served under probation.

Messi, 29, will appeal the decision and is believed to be unhappy with the support he received from Barca chiefs during the high-profile case.

SunSport exclusively revealed on Wednesday that Chelsea were ready to test the waters with a world record bid after owner Roman Abramovich held secret talks with Messi’s father in the past fortnight.

And Tebas has sought to reassure the five-time Ballon d’Or winner, insisting he does not think the star has done anything wrong.

Speaking at a press conference in Catalonia, Tebas said: “Of course I fear that [Messi] could leave.

“The only thing I can tell him is that from La Liga we believe he isn’t guilty and we are happy to have him here.

He added: “I don’t think he is a criminal – I don’t believe he knew anything.

“I think the Supreme Court will overturn the sentence. He was sucked in by a risky fiscal program that has brought these consequences.

“But you cannot forget that he has contributed over £135million to the Spanish state. That money has built motorways and hospitals.

“There is no prejudice or personal attack against Messi or against Barcelona. The world of sport is under investigation.”

Should Messi decide to leave the Nou Camp, long-time admirers Manchester City will rival Chelsea for his signature.

City bosses believe he is the man to finally lead the club to Champions League glory and new boss Pep Guardiola is keen to be reunited at the Etihad.

The Prem pair will be willing to stump up well over £100m to seal a sensational deal.

Barcelona had a bid for Atletico Madrid striker Angel Correa rejected on Thursday as they look to line up potential replacements.
