The duo were sentenced to 21 months in prison, but Spanish laws mean neither will see the inside of a cell.

Messi intends to appeal his punishment, but Barcelona are worried he could now leave for a fresh start abroad this summer.

SunSport understands that Messi’s father met with Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich on his private yacht earlier this week, and the Blues intend to make a world-record bid if there’s any indication the talismanic forward wants out of the Nou Camp.

Messi’s contract is also starting to wind down, and the riches on offer in the Premier League could tempt him to make the move after being hit with a fine by the Spanish authorities.

Barcelona have reportedly made a move to sign a replacement in Atletico Madrid youngster Angel Correa, but president Bartomeu seems determined to keep Messi in Catalonia after .

It read: “Leo, those who attack you are attacking Barca and its history. We’ll defend you to the end. Together forever!”

But Bartomeu’s plea could fall on deaf ears, with La Liga head chief Javier Tebas admitting there is a very strong chance Messi could end his time with Barcelona for a shot at English football.

Tebas said: “Of course I fear he could leave. The only thing I can tell him is that from La Liga we believe he isn’t guilty and we are happy to have him here.

“I don’t think he is a criminal – I don’t believe he knew anything. I think the Supreme Court will overturn the sentence. He was sucked in by a risky fiscal programme that has brought these consequences.

“There is no prejudice or personal attack against Messi or against Barcelona. The world of sport is under investigation.”
