Boffins Opta have revealed their best XI of Euro 2016 based on statistics – and there are a few surprises in store
STATISTICAL boffins Opta have revealed the best XI of Euro 2016 based on their data, and it does include some notable omissions.
Gareth Bale may have had a stormer for Wales in France, but the is no place for him in the best XI based on their match data.
His team-mate, Aaron Ramsey, does make the side, however. Arsenal man Ramsey, who was suspended for the Wales's 2-0 semi-final defeat by tournament winners Portugal, made a joint-high four assists in the competition alongside Eden Hazard.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored three goals as he guided Portugal to a surprise triumph, but based on statistics he does not make the best XI from the tournament either.
He did have just eight touches of the ball in the final at the Stade de France before injury forced him off in the 25th minute.

Rui Patricio, who made seven saves in the final alone, was statistically the best goalkeeper at the tournament. He did not make the most saves though, that accolade goes to Iceland stopper Hannes Halldorsson, who made 27 in total – that averaged out as 5.4 per game.
With six goals and two assists, French flier Antoine Griezmann was directly involved in more goals than any other player.
