Belgium boss Marc Wilmots received terrifying death-threat text before crushing Euro 2016 defeat to Wales and early exit
BELGIUM boss Marc Wilmots received a terrifying death-threat text from a woman before his side flopped at Euro 2016.
The Red Devils coach had a list of Premier League and top-class Champions League players in his squad but they had a hellish time in France and were dumped out early by Wales.
A brilliant looking side containing Everton striker Romelu Lukaku, Manchester United scapegoat Marouane Fellaini and Man City’s Kevin de Bruyne was knocked out by wonderful Wales 3-1 at the quarter-finals.
Even with Chelsea star Thibaut Courtois in goal they made a miserable start to the campaign with a demoralising 2-0 defeat to Italy in their opening match of the group stage.
They recovered to thrash minnows Republic of Ireland and Hungary in the bloated new format filled up with smaller teams.
But they were spanked by Chris Coleman’s side in the second serious test of the tournament, despite taking the lead through a brilliant strike from Radja Nainggolan.
Arsenal ace Aaron Ramsey inspired their comeback by creating goals for Ashley Williams and Hal Robson Kanu before big Sam Vokes finished the favourites off.
It was a humiliating end to the tournament for the fancied side but the manager went into the crucial clash stunned by a mobile message threatening his life 48 hours before.
His lawyer Walter Van Steenbrugge revealed: “Marc Wilmots has indeed been threatened with death. It is clear that the coach of the Red Devils is a victim.
“We take this seriously. The people behind these messages need to be identified urgently
“Everything indicates that Mr Wilmots was the victim of a fiction perpetrator. She claims that my client sent her texts. However, this is absolutely untrue.”
Van Steenbrugge will visit Bordeaux, where the team was based during the tournament, on Sunday and praised the French police on the case.
It’s reported in Belgium that the main suspect is a fanatical woman with a history of pestering Flemish stars online.
