Sam Allardyce to confirm that Wayne Rooney will remain in role as England captain
New Three Lions boss wants to keep Manchester United skipper as his enforcer on the field
SAM ALLARDYCE will confirm tomorrow that Wayne Rooney is staying as England captain.
The FA are aiming to arrange a friendly on September 1 for Allardyce’s first game as boss, with Czech Republic the likely opponents.
Roo will lead out the Three Lions for that clash and the opening World Cup qualifier in Slovakia three days later.
The Manchester United star, who has 115 caps, is easily Allardyce’s most experienced player.
He is also England’s record scorer with 53 goals.
Rooney, 30, vowed to carry on after the Three Lions’ dismal Euros this summer.
Allardyce will answer questions on his plans tomorrow at a St George’s Park press conference and Wazza is certain to take the armband.
Big Sam, 61, last night spoke about his pride at landing the England job — which he believed he should have had in 2006 instead of Steve McClaren.
He said: “For me, with my experience now, it is the right time.
“There is no doubt that it’s a very proud moment.
