The two Premier League clubs agreed the fee last week while Allen, as revealed by SunSport last night, has already spoken to Mark Hughes, a fellow Welshman, over a five-year contract.

Swansea, Sevilla and an unnamed Russian club from Moscow were all interested in Allen, who had just 12 months left on his current deal at Anfield.

But Stoke were the most pro-active side and the only club to agree a fee with the Merseysiders.

Allen made 132 appearances for Liverpool, scoring seven goals since he joined from Swansea for £15million in the summer of 2012.

But Allen spent large parts of last season on the bench with Kop boss Jurgen Klopp preferring Emre Can, Jordan Henderson and James Milner in midfield.

The Welsh ace impressed at Euro 2016 and was named in the official team of the tournament which forced Klopp to claim he would have to find a solution over his long-term future.

And once Liverpool agreed the big-money transfer fee last week then Allen knew where he stood and his exit proved inevitable especially after the Reds signed Gio Wijnaldum from Newcastle for £25million last Friday.
