KAI HAVERTZ finally earned his corn as Chelsea were crowned champions of Europe for the first time since 2012.

The Blues' record signing stepped up on the big occasion to score the only goal of a fascinating contest midway through the first half.

And while Havertz will steal the headlines, it was Chelsea's impeccable defence that helped ensure a famous night in Porto.

Here, SunSport's Richard Forrester gives his Chelsea player ratings as they triumphed on the biggest stage of all.

BENJAMIN MENDY - 7

Surprisingly had barely anything to do in the first half - protected brilliantly by Chelsea's defence.

Man City only mustered one shot on target in the contest.

Remarkably kept his ninth Champions League clean sheet of the season.

REECE JAMES - 10

Raheem Sterling caused one or two issues early on but he adapted brilliantly and turned in a hugely disciplined performance.

Ended up winning the battle out on the right side, frustrating Sterling throughout.

Stayed back in the second half as Chelsea looked to hold onto their lead and certainly sent a statement to England boss Gareth Southgate.

THIAGO SILVA - 6

Was chief organiser across the back before he had to come off injured with a groin injury on 38 minutes.

The 36-year-old was clearly distraught heading off the field before being replaced by Andreas Christensen.

CESAR AZPILICUETA - 9

Was concerned seeing him playing across the middle but used all of his experience to turn in an excellent performance.

Read the game brilliantly and made a superb block to deny City an equaliser in the second half.

ANTONIO RUDIGER - 9

Pulled off the tackle of the match to deny Phil Foden midway through the first half.

Possibly been one of Chelsea's best players this season and continued his form with another commanding performance.

Naughty block on De Bruyne in the second half that forced the Belgian off.

BEN CHILWELL - 10

Played his role in Chelsea's opener with a brilliant first-time touch into Mount.

Made up so much ground to make a last-ditch tackle in the first half. Offered plenty going forward and solid defensively.

Must have covered an extraordinary amount of turf and fully deserves the plaudits for keeping Mahrez quiet.

N'GOLO KANTE - 10

Run out of superlatives for the tenacious midfielder. He was everywhere, stealing possession deep inside his own half and contributing to the attack.

Rarely gave away possession and proved why he is considered one of the best midfielders in world football.

Constantly produced superbly timed tackles to quell Manchester City's attack.

JORGINHO - 7

Did what he does best and hugely benefits from playing alongside Kante in midfield.

Not shy in the tackle and played his role in keeping City's creative talents quiet.

MASON MOUNT - 8

Another brilliant performance and was rewarded with an impressive assist for Havertz's opening goal.

His pass was pin-point into the German's path. Was quieter in the second half as Man City started to dominate the ball before being subbed off.

KAI HAVERTZ - 8

It took him all season but he finally announced himself in a Chelsea shirt in the biggest game of them all. Made a brilliant run through City's defence and took it beyond Ederson to open the scoring.

Chelsea's most expensive player of all-time showed glimpses of why Frank Lampard paid the big bucks for his signature.

Continued to cause Manchester City problems by finding little pockets of space.

TIMO WERNER - 5

Missed a glorious chance in the opening 10 minutes when he completely missed the ball with a wild swing.

Could have had another three minutes later but couldn't muster any power in his shot.

Plenty of decent runs down the channels but his end product was far from good enough. Confidence of a player with two goals in 23 matches.

Andreas Christensen - 8

Was given a tough job of replacing Silva in the first half but didn't look out of place in the defence.

Could easily have needed time to get into the contest but lookef self-assured throughout.
