Tottenham Hotspur suffer blow as Mauricio Pochettino’s trusted lieutenant resigns

Head of recruitment Paul Mitchell leaves role as transfer specialist at White Hart Lane club on eve of new Premier League season

TOTTENHAM have suffered a blow on the eve of the new Premier League season as transfer chief Paul Mitchell resigned from the club.

The 34-year-old, who helped bring in a number of young stars such as Dele Alli, still had a year left on his contract as head of recruitment for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Mitchell, however, has decided to end his time at White Hart Lane early and will now serve out his notice before ending his two-year stay at the club, according to the Daily Mail.

His departure is not related to the Spurs boss, who he followed from Southampton to north London in 2014.

Highly-rated Mitchell played a huge role in the successful recruitment policy at the south coast side since moving to St Mary’s in 2012 – with many of the players he helped bring in netting the Saints a huge profit when later sold.

He worked alongside Nigel Adkins, Pochettino and Ronald Koeman briefly before moving to the capital.

Mitchell has already seen a number of youngsters he helped to bring to Spurs blossom in the first-team, including Alli, who has also broke into the England side.

Former Wigan and MK Dons defender Mitchell had his playing career cut-short through injury, but he turned his hand to recruitment when offered a role at the latter by manager Karl Robinson in 2010.
