JOHN TERRY thinks Manchester United have got themselves a Rolls Royce of a player by signing Raphael Varane from Real Madrid.

The ex-Chelsea legend reckons Varane's smooth style will compliment Harry Maguire's aggressiveness at United, making them a formidable defensive pair.

Terry thinks their relationship will be just like his and ex-Blues star Ricardo Carvalho at the back when they were in their prime.

Portuguese ace Carvalho spent six seasons by Terry's side at Stamford Bridge, winning the Premier League title three times in the process.

Terry told : "I think him and Harry (Maguire) will have a great relationship together.

"It kind of reminds me of myself and Carvalho, if I'm honest.

"The kind of Rolls-Royce that Varane is and how good Harry is on the ball and aggressive as well.

"So I think they'll be a great combination together and, like I say, it will definitely strengthen them moving forward.

"But Varane is a top, top player and I'm looking forward to seeing how he does in the league this year."

It normally takes foreign imports a while to adapt to the fast past of the Premier League but Terry doesn't think Varane will have that issue.

The French centre-back has won a World Cup with France and Champions Leagues medals with Madrid, and that will give him all the preparation he needs to suceed in the Prem, according to Terry.

United have been missing someone of Varane's quality in their defence over the last few years and Terry believes he's the man to help them get back on track.

The ex-Aston Villa assistant boss added: "I think it's a natural one for people to say that it will take time for players to adapt.

"But when you've played at the level and kind of competition that he's played at – winning the World Cup, Champions Leagues – he'll hit the ground running I'm sure of that.

"I think from the outside watching Man United from afar, that's been the key area I think they've been missing over the last few years so it's good to see them dip into the market and get such a top player."

And Terry knows a thing or two about defending as during his Blues career he made a staggering 492 appearances and helped them keep 214 clean sheets along the way.

Varane was supposed to complete his switch to Old Trafford yesterday.

But United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's revealed that his move's been slowed down due to Covid-19 isolation.

He said: "He hasn't trained with us and all the dots over the I's and crossed the T's aren't done yet.

"Things always happen and take time, unfortunately with the [Covid] isolation, this has delayed things so it's not 100 per cent done yet.

"I can't say he will be involved tomorrow, I can probably say he won't be. The big hold-up was quarantine and isolation.

"He's been in Manchester and it will be done soon."
