Van Gaal, 70, has replaced Frank de Boer at the Oranje helm after the former Crystal Palace gaffer was axed following the Euro 2020 last-16 defeat to Czech Republic.

Van Gaal’s first stint as Holland boss came between July 2000 and November 2001, winning nine of his 15 games.

He then returned in July 2012 for two more years, winning 18 out of 29 games while also securing third place at the 2014 World Cup.

Van Gaal had been out of a job since a mixed spell at Manchester United which ended in May 2016.

But despite spending over five years on the sidelines, the veteran is confident he is the right man to restore the Dutch to the top of international football - starting with glory at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Speaking at his unveiling, Van Gaal said: “I’m not doing this for myself but I'm doing it to help Dutch football.

“I’ve always done everything to help Dutch football.

“I have a lot to thank them for, the status that I have as a coach is thanks to them.

“I think if I was the Dutch football association, I'd also have approached me. Who else could have done it?

“It might sound a little melodramatic, but I think experience is now very important because we do not have any time.

“We have to achieve immediately and you cannot do that without fit players.

“In 2000 it was a honour to be appointed coach, in 2012 it was an honour to serve again but now it is even more of an honour.”
