Cash splash smashes £1bn

Premier League clubs will break £1billion spending barrier with big-money spent on signings such as Paul Pogba and John Stones

Manchester United and City amongst biggest spenders in England a summer window cash outlay is biggest in history

PREMIER LEAGUE clubs will smash their transfer spending record — and break the £1billion barrier for the first time.

Shortly after Manchester City’s signing of Barcelona goalkeeper Claudio Bravo was confirmed, Prem clubs’ summer outlay stood at £880million, already beating the £870m total of 2015.

Top of the pile was Manchester United’s £89m swoop for Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba.

Other huge deals included John Stones and Leroy Sane joining City for £47.5m and £37m respectively and Chelsea’s acquisition of Michy Batshuayi for £33m.

According to financial services firm Deloitte, at the same stage last year the figure was £685m — a whopping £195m down on this time around.

Dan Jones, of Deloitte, said: “This is the fourth summer in a row where we have seen record-breaking spending by Premier League clubs.

“Buoyed by the prospect of increased revenue from new broadcast deals, clubs’ gross spending has now passed last year’s record.

“This is particularly striking considering we still have the best part of a week to go before deadline day.”

The transfer window closes on Wednesday.

Jones added: “With the third round of games to come this weekend, and a number of clubs keen to strengthen with a view to European and domestic cup competitions, total spending in this window will likely break the £1billion barrier for the first time.”
