But the Premier League champions are refusing to be held to ransom by Sporting and are only willing to pay around £23m.

Algeria international Slimani, 28, is thought to be keen on a move to the King Power Stadium where he would join countryman Riyad Mahrez.

But Leicester bosses have been frightened by Lisbon’s huge demand.

If they cannot do a deal they will look at other targets before the window closes.

Leicester will ask Sporting to lower their price for Slimani who is under contract until 2020.

West Brom also made an enquiry for Slimani earlier this month but their move never got off the ground.

City have been looking to bolster their attacking options before the transfer window closes on.

Frozen out Leicester midfielder Gokhan Inler is wanted by Turkish side Besiktas and Lyon.
