MANCHESTER UNITED'S cast of superstars struggled to a 1-1 draw against relegation-threatened Newcastle.

Ralf Rangnick's men were heavy favourites to win the clash but too many of them did not turn up.

Here, SunSport's Toby Gannon runs the rule over United's players.

DAVID DE GEA - 9/10

Largely to thank for this point - as is so often the case.

Made a save-of-the-season contender to deny Miguel Almiron with just minutes left on the clock.

That was after a great reflex stop from just two yards out to prevent Saint-Maximin scoring a second goal.

ALEX TELLES - 5

Got up and down the left flank all game but with not until Cavani came on did he have a proper target to find.

HARRY MAGUIRE - 5

Looked uncomfortable all night under Newcastle's high press.

Had the ball nicked off him just minutes into the game by Ryan Fraser and never looked up to the pace.

RAPHAEL VARANE - 5

Robbed of ball in build-up to the first goal and was unable to stop Allan Saint-Maximin before he got his shot away.

Looked out of sorts on his return after two months out injured.

DIOGO DALOT - 6

Brilliant cross to pick out Cavani for his equaliser but was too often caught out of position and unable to handle the dangerous Saint-Maximin.

SCOTT MCTOMINAY - 5

Wasteful in possession in the first half and struggled to break up counter-attacks which is surely his job in this team.

FRED - 4

Struggled to keep possession and establish any midfield presence against a team who look almost doomed. Was rightly replaced at half-time.

BRUNO FERNANDES - 6

Was the only United player to show some creativity for most of the game and tracked back well to cut short Saint-Maximin's mazy run a few minutes after the break.

MASON GREENWOOD - 4

Offered very little bar the odd burst of pace and was hauled off at half-time for Jadon Sancho.

MARCUS RASHFORD - 5

Fans thought he was lucky not to be sacrificed instead of Greenwood.

Picked out Telles with a tasty through-ball in the 75th minute but it was a rare moment of worth for the England star, who was berated by Ronaldo for wasting a United counter-attack after a Newcastle corner.

Spooned a dreadful shot wide under little pressure 15 minutes after the break which pretty much said it all.

CRISTIANO RONALDO - 5

His poor performance echoed his pre-match warm-up.

Just as he was jeered by Newcastle fans for missing his shots in training before kick-off, hardly anything Ronaldo did in the game paid off.

Was offside in the build-up to a brilliant Fernandes chance, embarrassingly missed the ball in a wild attempt to volley from just yards out, and was arguably lucky to see just yellow for a dangerous foul on Ryan Fraser.

JADON SANCHO - 6

Added more creativity than Greenwood and gave better options from out wide.

Did well to pick out Cavani unmarked in the box who fluffed his lines.

EDINSON CAVANI - 7

Scuffed his shot wide of the post after picking up a brilliant position inside the box 10 minutes after his introduction.

Found himself in space once again in the 70th minute and scored through sheer determination on the follow-up after his first effort was blocked.
